Relay for Life Kuala Lumpur 2016

Relay for Life Kuala Lumpur 2016 was held at Dataran Petaling Jaya on 6-7 August 2016. The fundraising  carnival was an annual event organized by National Cancer Society Malaysia. It was a 16-hour overnight event from 6.00pm on August 6 till 10.00am on August 7 2016. 

The event celebrated the lives of cancer survivors and remembered those who had lost their lives in the fight against cancer.  Besides that, it also raised public awareness about cancer in the community.

In this event, cancer survivors wore light blue t-shirts while non-cancer survivors wore purple colour t-shirts.

Members of Persatuan Guolin Qigong Malaysia, both cancer survivors and non-cancer survivors participated in the event as an annual routine.  When members from Cheras Branch, Taiping Branch, Petaling Jaya Station, Titiwangsa Station, Bukit Jalil Station and Bangi Station met at Dataran Petaling Jaya, they were all in high spirits.  There was a subtle sense of belonging to the Guolin family that bound them together.   After photo taking sessions, they were all ready to walk the first lap, the Survivors’ Lap, around the track. This was to celebrate their victory over cancer. Other participants that lined the track cheered them on.

Members also stayed on for the Luminaria Ceremony to honour cancer survivors and to remember those who had lost their lives in the battle with cancer.  A Luminaria is a bag with some sand and a candle. Personalised messages were written on the bags.  The lit Luminarias were placed around the Relay track as tributes to those who had been affected by cancer. It was a quiet, sad and touching moment when the participants’ thoughts were with the loved ones who had lost their lives.

There is life after cancer. Let’s celebrate hope together.
